Chapter 23
I left the secret meeting with a head full of ingredients. At first, I had worried about remembering them, but thankfully the Great Picture had taken this information and quickly added it to a list, saving me the task of having to recall just what I needed. There were six ingredients on the list, a few of them common back home, but two that would take some effort to find.
The first ingredient was an egg of a manticore, a vicious beast that had a great deal of ways to kill humans with little effort. I didnât know the first thing about finding a manticore, but thankfully my Expedition Advisor would be able to locate one for me. Finding monsters during the fall wasnât hard when out on expeditions, and so I commissioned for a scouting team to go out and find me a manticore.
The second ingredient that was difficult to source was an enchanted reed that would be used to mix the concoction together. These reeds, known as Arundia, were only located in the northernmost part of Liskua, where the twin volcanoes rested. Despite the volcanic area being dangerous to most forms of plant life, these enchanted reeds grew without concern for the volcanic activity in the area.
Getting to the Northern Tip of Liskua wouldnât be easy for me, but ever since I had read about it while looking for basalt, I couldnât stop thinking about the place. The mysterious natives who lived there, made of stone, would be curious to meet and perhaps even to open trade with. It looked that either way, Iâd be heading out there at some point.
While Alamander had assumed that there was no way home for us other than teleportation, I had neglected to tell him about the drydock that we had built off the shore. The drydock was where ships could be repaired, outfitted and readied for their return trips home. But on top of that, I could also place construction orders at the dock itself. Making a small galley that could travel up the coast of Liskua wouldnât be a bad idea, especially since I knew the pirates would only attack ships sighted coming out of my own harbors. This galley would be perfectly safe, at least from pirates.
I put in the order for a galley to be built, which would take a few days. In that time, Iâd have to go and smooth things over with Yurip and the rest of my trading partners, to ensure that weâd be able to resume trade as soon as the gate on this side was finalized. An excitement was building in me as I thought about the idea of unfettered, instant travel through the gates, essentially turning the cost of intercoastal trade to mere trivialities. Our shipping company could begin offering the services to other Champions (once the Tradies were gone, of course) and charge high shipping rates while paying very little expenses. The potential was unlimited.
Yet, as I walked to Yuripâs office
